'Our mission is to support the Church .... '
Stable One came into existence to help churches work together to minister to those experiencing homelessness in our community. As an organisation we are seeking to equip the church and to provide the necessary coordination and facilitation for ecumenical projects.
We have been working hard since August 2016 to bring our Christian community together - to pray and also to act. The Winter Night Shelter pilot project was our first big effort and took an enormous amount of work (read about it here). 165 volunteers came together from different local churches and denominations and from within the local community. They worked side-by-side for 13 weeks to run the Shelter, allowing even very small churches (numerically) to utilise their buildings for accommodation. Other churches supported the project financially and through prayer.
In 2018 we are planning to again open the Winter Night Shelter through June, July and August, the coldest months of the year.
Seven churches are offering to take one night of the week each, and another is going to open up in the afternoons (Mon-Fri) as a Daytime Support Centre. They represent Lutheran, Presbyterian, Christian Reformed, Churches of Christ, Catholic and Baptist denominations. It is thrilling to be able to come together in this way and to love our neighbours, as Jesus commanded us to.
